British Coins

Dive into a rich history of British coins, dating back hundreds of years. Whether you collect early medieval hammered coins or contemporary commemorative decimal coins, there are so many to choose from. Our current decimal coin system was introduced back in 1968 by the Royal Mint but before that, there were several different denominations we don't use today including shillings, farthings, halfpennies, groats, gold nobles and sovereigns. Collecting these little pieces of British history is a fascinating way to discover the heritage of this great country.

Condition and Quality of Coins

When purchasing collectable coins, the condition and quality of the coin are naturally at the forefront of your mind. Coins are produced and sold in a variety of different finishes. At the pinnacle of your different quality options, you have proof coins. Produced using fewer dies and more strikes for a beautifully defined finish, they are carefully aligned and polished by hand. Proof coins are made using the highest standard of the Royal Mint and so tend to be the most expensive.

Next, you have Brilliant Uncirculated (or BU) coins, which are finished to a finer standard than your average coins produced for circulation. The lowest quality of uncirculated coins are Bullion coins, which have a similar finish to regular circulating coins. You can select your coin quality based on your budget and the reason for your purchase. Proof coins are the top choice for serious collectors or those looking for a special commemorative gift.

Sets of Coins

Purchasing a set of coins can make a thoughtful gift for someone that loves coins or a well-deserved treat for yourself! Many coin sets are produced to mark a special occasion, such as the Queen's birthday, while others have simply been put together to showcase the coins produced in a certain year. A set of coins from a new baby's year of birth makes a lovely christening present.
